Two Saves in One Day

PBA President Patrick J. Lynch (right) with Police Officers Andrew Nugent and Greg Mattius of Emergency Services Unit Truck 1, who received certificates of merit from the police union for staging two rescues in one day last May. In the morning, the two cops pulled a man threatening to jump off a roof to safety, and, barely three hours later, they dived into the East River to rescue a woman who was drowning. The two were among scores of officers named "Cops of the Month"  at a Dec. 4 awards ceremony held at the Water Club in Manhattan. Others were cited for acts of bravery ranging from shootouts with armed robbers to rescuing people from burning buildings.
