Heroic Former Officer Comes Out in Support of Louima Cop

A heroic former police officer is coming out in support of another former officer in jail in connection with the Abner Louima torture case. Detective Steven McDonald went to see Charles Schwarz at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan on Monday. McDonald, who was paralyzed after being shot in the back in 1986, says he wants to show support for Schwarz. McDonald also called Schwarz's imprisonment "a miscarriage of justice." Schwarz is in jail for violating Louima's civil rights by helping former officer Justin Volpe attack Louima. The Haitian immigrant was beaten and sodomized inside the bathroom of Brooklyn's 70th Precinct stationhouse in 1997. A second trial in connection with the beating is scheduled to begin on January 19th with jury selection.
