Officer Recovering Following Accident That Killed Two

A Brooklyn police office is in guarded condition following a crash that killed his partner and a newspaper truck driver early Sunday morning. Police say officer Kenneth Waszak, 34, has a fractured spine. He is recovering at Lutheran Hospital. Authorities say the officers were responding to an emergency call when a New York Post delivery truck hit their patrol car at an intersection in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Waszak was driving at the time of the accident. His partner at the 62nd Precinct, 28-year-old David Regan, appears to have died instantly. The truck's driver, 38-year-old Jacques Lavache, died after being taken to Lutheran Hospital. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani surveyed photos of the wreck and said the accident was among the worst he's ever seen. "The truck hit in the center of the car on the passenger side, which is why the injuries to Regan were so much worse," the mayor said. Emergency workers had to cut the police car open to get to the officers out. The two officers were appointed to the force within 11 days of each other last summer.
