Police Officers Killed In WTC Tragedy To Receive Medal Of Honor

MedalsThe New York City Police Department plans to give medals of honor next month to 23 of its men and women who died in the World Trade Center disaster, the New York Post reported Saturday.

The medal is the department's highest award. It is usually given a year after an officer's death.

Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said that he and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani wanted to be able to present the medals before they leave office in January.

The ceremony, originally scheduled for September 26, will happen on December 4.

Also due to receive honors: an officer who died in an auto accident, and six emergency service unit officers injured in a shootout in Brooklyn last year.
