City Union Members, Seeking Benefits, To Begin Picketing At MSG

Police officers, firefighters and teachers plan to begin a round-the-clock picket at Madison Square Garden Monday morning.

The demonstration is timed to coincide with the beginning of preparations for the Republican National Convention, set to take place August 30-September 2.

The unions are angry over failed wage and benefit negotiations between the city, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the Uniformed Firefighters Association and the United Federation of Teachers.

Last week, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced agreements with several other unions representing nearly 10,000 municipal workers.
