Johnson Gets Maximum Sentence for Killing Officer on Staten Island

The Staten Island teenager convicted of killing a police officer earlier this month was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison Monday for his crime.

Although he received the maximum sentence, Shatiek Johnson will be eligible for parole because he was only charged with second degree murder. Johnson was not charged with first degree murder because he was only 17 at the time of the shooting in 1998.

On December 3rd, a jury convicted Johnson in connection with the death of Officer Gerard Carter. Police say Johnson shot Carter at point blank range while the officer was sitting in a police van. Carter was set to serve Johnson a warrant for failing to do community service after a fare-beating charge.

Staten Island District Attorney William Murphy says Johnson's maximum sentence "is exactly what he deserved."
