PBA to honor heroic officers


Police Officer Kenneth Healey will be honored by the PBA on Thursday. Healey was attacked a hatchet-wielding madman last year.

An officer who died while responding to a fire in a Coney Island housing complex, a cop who was shot in both legs in Brooklyn while trying to stop a fare evader, and an officer attacked by an unhinged “Lone Wolf” terrorist in Queens  will all be honored by the city’s largest police union on Thursday.

The Patrolman Benevolent Association, which represents almost 50,000 active and retired NYPD officers, will host the Finest of Finest Award Ceremony at the Water Club on E. 30th St. in Manhattan at 2 p.m. and will present awards for the heroics of 49 officers and 2 sergeants who bled – or died – for the department. 

Police Officer Dennis Guerra will be honored by the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association on Thursday.

Officer Dennis Guerra, who was fatally injured while rushing to a fire a fire in public housing development in Coney Island in April of 2014, will be given an award that will be accepted by his wife. His partner, Rosa Rodriguez, who was also seriously injured in the blaze, will also be honored.

Officer Kenneth Healey, who survived being struck in the head by a hatchet wielding “lone wolf” terrorist attacker in Jamaica Queens in in October of 2014, his partner, Joseph Meeker,  who was also injured in the attack, and officers Taylor Kraft and Peter Rivera, who killed the attacker, will receive awards.

Also recognized will be Police officer James Li, who was shot in both legs by a gunman evading bus fare in Crown Heights in February of 2014. Li’s partner, officer Randy Chow, who returned fire at the gunman, will also be awarded at the event. Police Officers Wenjain Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were assassinated in thier squad car in December will be honored at a later date, officials said.

“These are really some extraordinary cases of heroics,” PBA spokesman Al O’Leary said.

The award ceremony is held twice a year.
