Police Protest Song at Rally

Several thousand off-duty New York City police officers and their supporters gathered in Battery Park yesterday to show solidarity for the police, to protest what they considered low police pay and to criticize a new song by Bruce Springsteen.

The song, "American Skin," deplores the killing of Amadou Diallo by four New York police officers. Patrick J. Lynch, the president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, has urged city officers to boycott concerts by Mr. Springsteen, who began a 10-show stop at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

At the rally, however, he said only that he questioned Mr. Springsteen's "choice and motive to sing the song."
