NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Announces Purchase of Bulletproof Vests for Police

By WSJ Staff

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, on the heels of¬†criticism from the city’s police unions over his handling of anti-police protests this winter, announced Friday his administration would spend roughly $7.3 million to upgrade about 13,000 bulletproof vests for its police force.

The issue of vests that are beyond their expiration date has been raised by the city’s police unions and has become a hot-button issue for the mayor in the past month. The new vests are thinner and will be custom fit to each officer, Police Commissioner William Bratton said.

Since 1978, bulletproof vests have saved the lives of 87 NYPD officers who were shot or attacked in the line of duty, the mayor’s office said.
