IS 259 McKinley Intermediate School
May 16, 2012: the PBA presented plaques of appreciation to the students of IS 259 McKinley Intermediate School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, for their participation in creating a beautiful memorial mural honoring all those who died during the attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
The project was conceived by Tom Buxton, a teacher, who realize that these young students had no first-hand knowledge of what happened that tragic day or why. Under his direction, the students researched the event, wrote poems and painted a mural that depicts the horror and honor the day brought. The names of all those who died in the collapse have been painstakingly hand painted on a whole wall of the top floor of the school along with heroic depictions of first responders.
A dedication ceremony was held May 16 and the PBA awarded plaques to the dozens of students who volunteered their time before and after class to create this lasting memorial.
