A jury on Monday convicted Murrell of first-degree assault on a police officer, but when it came to the charge of second-degree attempted murder, the jurors chose to acquit. His lawyer,
"This punk knew he had a police officer hanging off the side of the stolen car that he was driving and he intentionally drove wildly in an attempt to kill the officer," Lynch said. "This jury fell for this baby-faced punk and now it is imperative that (the) judge give him the maximum sentence for the conviction on the assault of a police officer charge."
Veve, 36, depends on 24-hour care, and can't remember his wife or daughter, prosecutors said.
Nevertheless, a spokesman for
Murrell "callously dragged Officer Veve, at a high rate of speed, for several blocks, showing an appalling and intentional disregard for human life," Gonzalez said in a written statement.
Murrell will be sentenced as a juvenile because he was under 16 when he committed the crime.
