Never will most of us harbor the courage it took NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo to respond to a report of a suspect fleeing a Bronx home invasion robbery.
And never should New York forget his service and sacrifice, as we mourn his fatal shooting by a savage and heartless criminal.
Let us pray too for the speedy recovery of Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, injured in the gunfire.
It is by throwing themselves at the possibility of such brutality, day after day, that the brave members of the NYPD, in uniform and out, protect this city’s millions so effectively, with a murder rate on track to the lowest in a half century and other violent crimes at near-historic lows.
Alongside the family of this hero who helped protect New York for nearly 19 years, a shaken city offers its most profound respects.
