NYC police union backs Bloomberg for 3rd term

By Associated Press

NEW YORK -- New York City's largest police union is endorsing incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a third term, giving him a sweep of all five police unions.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association has never backed Bloomberg before.

Last year, the Bloomberg administration and the union reached a labor deal that was its first agreement since 1994 that did not have to be decided by a state arbitration panel.

The deal gave officers raises of 17 percent over four years and raised starting pay for rookies.

Bloomberg is running on the Republican and Independent Party lines. His Democratic challenger, William Thompson Jr., secured endorsements from Democrats in the state Assembly on Monday.
