PBA Members Over There

One of the saddest days in recent PBA-NYPD history dawned Aug. 2 when James D. McNaughton, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves, became the first New York City police officer killed while serving in Iraq. The 27-year-old soldier with NYPD-blue in his blood was shot by a sniper while guarding an Iraqi police station.

This police officer’s death reminded us of how many of our fellow cops are serving in the war on terrorism on foreign shores. According to the best count available, some 1,160 uniformed members of the NYPD service are enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves and about 700 have been deployed stateside or overseas since the 9/11 attacks. They range in NYPD rank from P.O. to one-star chief – but most of them are police officers and PBA members. Of course, they are earning more than their share of Bronze Stars and other citations for valor and meritorious service.

The photographs below are meant as a tribute to them and an appreciation for their sacrifice.
