| While the PERB panel was in the final stages of its PBA contract deliberations, New York City police officers were out there showing what a many-splendored job they do. On Tuesday, June 14, a sightseeing helicopter plunged into the East River just moments after its 1:29 p.m. takeoff with a pilot and six tourists aboard. Several Harbor Unit boats, Scuba Team divers and other special services police officers sped to the scene and quickly — at great danger to themselves — rescued all victims. Many of the NYPD boats were near the area on anti-terrorism patrol — one more reason our cops deserved more than the city was offering. In another potentially deadly afternoon incident on Friday of that same week, June 20, a helicopter carrying two pilots and six business executives crashed into the East River just north of the earlier plunge. Again, New York City’s police officers — this time more than ably abetted by some very heroic civilians — saw to it that no lives were lost. | |
